What is Supported Employment?

Supported employment (SE) is a vocational rehabilitation method that helps people with serious mental illnesses find and keep competitive jobs in the community. SE also provides the support needed for people to succeed in the workplace.

SE aims to give people with disabilities more autonomy and integrate them into the community. A successful SE model allows people to have long-term, meaningful employment that matches their needs and interests.

SE involves competitive integrated employment (CIE), which is part-time or full-time work in the general labor market, including self-employment. The workplace is in the community and is not owned or managed by the provider of support services. The pay is minimum wage or higher, and the person with a disability works and interacts with people who do not have a disability.
