Former Georgia Bulldog Justin Fields signed a contract with the New York Jets on the first day of free agency. He joins the Jets on a two-year, $40 million deal with $30 million guaranteed.
The Jets will be looking to unlock the potential of the 26-year-old. He was selected 11th overall by the Chicago Bears in the 2021 NFL draft, but after three years, the Bears traded him to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a sixth-round pick. He started the first six games of the season for the Steelers, but despite efficient passing numbers, Russell Wilson replaced him.
Now, Fields is expected to have the opportunity to start for the Jets. Fields was the best recruit in Georgia history, but the Bulldogs started Jake Fromm. After one season at UGA, Fields transferred to Ohio State, where he totaled 5,373 passing yards and 63 passing touchdowns in two seasons. He ran for 867 yards and 15 touchdowns for good measure. Fromm remains in the NFL with the Detroit Lions.

The mobile aspect of Fields' game has translated to the NFL successfully. In weeks 9 and 10 of the 2022 NFL season, Fields became the first quarterback to rush for 140 yards in two straight games. However, Fields still hasn't evolved as a volume passer, never eclipsing 4,000 yards in a season. He has been sacked 151 times in four seasons as a starter, which is nearly 40 sacks a season.
