Ed Hawkins is a legend for many reasons. Yes, Eddie was the first African American born in the U.S. to play for our USA Soccer Men's National Team when he stepped onto the field on December 2, 1984, against Ecuador. However, those of us that grew up with him in Washingtonville, NY witnessed his greatness and marveled at it. Not just because of his performance on the field and achievements, but because of his work ethic and work habits. At one time or another, all of us saw him walking or jogging around our town & school constantly dribbling a soccer ball...
His maturity, his humility and his personal standard was beyond all of us, yet he never acted as though he was better or different. There was NO ONE like him in our town... NO ONE
Thank you for being the standard Eddie
