Chili Peppers Selected for 2024 CPL Stream of the Year Award

August 13, 2024 12:18 pm

The Coastal Plain League announced this afternoon that the Tri-City Chili Peppers have been selected as having the Stream of the Year for 2024.

“It’s an honor for the Chili Peppers to win the 2024 CPL Stream of the Year,” remarked Chili Peppers General Manager Rob Perez. “This was an historic season for the Chili Peppers and the game of baseball, as we implemented Cosmic Baseball. Our broadcast and streaming team played a vital role in making this and every home game happen so that the Chili Peppers and Cosmic experience could grow nationally and fans from all over could watch and be a part of it. Because of the dedication of our camera operators, the preparation and excitement from our broadcasters and the resourcefulness and outstanding leadership from the director, they elevated our streaming experience to a new level. We are very proud of what this team accomplished!”

Utilizing a broadcast team of three camera operators: John Carter (Rhode Island), Greyson Smith (James Madison), and Michael Iannitto (George Mason), a production director, George Gaston (Longwood), and broadcasters Charlie Ben-Ami (Syracuse) and Connor Schuh (Ohio State), Tri-City was able to offer a professional viewing experience with multiple angles that helped the audience feel as if they were at the game.

Under Gaston’s leadership, the team was able to incorporate a new set of graphics, including ones for starting pitchers, defense setups, starting lineups, batter stat lines, etc. They utilized a directional condenser microphone to better capture sounds at home plate as well as ambient stadium audio to help immerse the viewer; and also mastered the ability to make multiple cuts in cameras during each inning so that it appeared that they were utilizing more than three cameras on the field. The Chili Peppers stream team also worked in the ability to show instant replays of key plays such as home runs and web gems, as well as a split-screen technique to show the game from two perspectives (e.g., base runners advancing while an outfielder is chasing down a ball in the gap), which added extra spice to their production.

“Everything was well thought out from a production side” one fan commented. “Not only was the camera quality high, but the usage of graphics and angles was much welcomed. Overall, the action of the game and in the stadium was captured seamlessly.”
