SBL Mid-Season Recap

June 29, 2024 7:41 AM EDT

Lawrenceville, GA - We are at the halfway point in the Sunbelt regular season and one noticeable thing this season is the home run numbers. Last season, the league total for home runs was 87 and so far, this season the league has hit 67 home runs. The league total record for home runs is 104 and with this season already at 67, that record looks like it will fall. Last season the league leader had 4 home runs, this season three batters have 4 or more and another six have 3 home runs.

Waleska Wild Things

The Wild Things have completely turned around their franchise this season, becoming one of the best teams in the league. The Wild are leading the league in hits and second in RBIs, they are led by their standout third baseman Cade Fuller. Fuller leads the league in home runs and is in the top 3 in RBIs. Wild Cather Cayden Sheffield is also having a great season with a batting average of .444 and ranked third in hits.

Gainesville Gol’Diggers

If you pay attention to the Sunbelt League, you know the Gainesville Gol’Diggers have been the team to beat for the past 3 seasons. This season is no different with new head coach Blake Davis leading the Gol’Diggers to a share of first place. The strong point of the Gol’Diggers is pitching as they lead the league in strikeouts and rank second in runs allowed. The Gol’Diggers currently have 4 pitchers in the top 10 in strikeouts and 3 of those pitchers are in the top 10 in ERA. On the batting side, the Gol’Diggers are the leaders of stolen bases and runs with Jacques Walker leading the league with 11 stolen bases and ranked fourth in runs scored.

Alpharetta Aviators

The Alpharetta Aviators are one of the tallest teams you will see in the league, if you peer into their dugout you might mistake them for a basketball team. The Aviators are one of 5 teams tied for first in the league and rank near the middle in each stat category. Batters Emory Guilford and Jackson Morgan are in the top 10 in hits and batting average. Pitchers Benjamin Weiser and Blythe Keisler lead their pitching staff. Keisler is the league leader in wins and Weiser is ranked fourth in ERA.

Atlanta Crackers

The Atlanta Crackers are another team that consistently ranks near the top in the league standings every year. This year's Crackers team is currently tied for first and leads the league in RBIs and home runs. Charlie Banks and Jaden Anderson are the top two in the league in hits and Anderson leads the league in doubles. The Crackers' back end of the bullpen has been one of the best in the league. Davis Williams is leading the league in saves and pitcher Tams Mullins has not allowed a run in 10 innings pitched with 15 strikeouts.

Choccolocco Monsters

The Choccolocco Monsters have been a fearful team since they entered the Sunbelt league and this year, they are one of the five teams tied for first place. The Monsters are tied with the Crackers with the league leading home runs of 14 despite being last in hits and RBIs. The Monsters' pitching is leading the league in the runs allowed with 65 and ranked third in hits allowed with 114. The Monsters' two-way player Hayes Harrison is third in the league in home runs hit and fourth in the league in strikeouts thrown. Dawson Campbell, Will Tarpley, and Howell Polk are all in the top 10 in ERA with Polk and Tarpley tied for second in wins.

Cartersville Cannons

The Cartersville Cannons are a new team to the Sunbelt League and currently are fighting for the final playoff spot. The Cannons have the lowest margin of defeat with 7 of their 8 losses being less than 2 runs. Hank Smith and Brady McDevitt are tied for third in the league for hits and Will Fincher is ranked second in RBIs. Pitchers Brady Owens, Ethan Carroll, and Kinkade Clark rank in the top five in strikeouts, and each has a sub-3 era.

Atlanta Blues

The Atlanta Blues are fighting with the Cannons for the final playoff spot in the standings but hold the head-to-head edge over the Cannons. The Blues have given up the league's most runs but rank third in runs scored. The Blues pitcher Gavon Wray leads the league with 22 strikeouts in 19 innings pitched and holds the fourth-best ERA. The Blues did get their standout outfielder from last season Jamarie Brooks back late into this season. Miles Bowens is tied for third in home runs and ranked in the top 10 in RBIs.

Brookhaven Bucks

The Brookhaven Bucks are the definition of someone who has to lose the game. The Bucks are currently last in the standings but only a game and a half out of the last playoff spot. Despite being in last place, the Bucks are ranked second in hits, third in runs scored, and third in home runs. The Bucks also rank third in earned runs allowed but have the most hits allowed in the league. Cooper Williams is second in the league for batting average and Forrest Lietz is third in home runs hit.  Pitchers Cian Khajavi and Jake Beaver lead their pitching staff. Cian has the second-lowest ERA in the league and Beaver is ranked second in strikeouts with a top-10 ERA.
