A former Clemson standout recently weighed in on DJ Uiagalelei and his latest transfer destination.

Following three seasons at Clemson and then one at Oregon State, Uiagalelei has transferred to Florida State for the 2024 campaign.

In an episode of Gramlich & Mac Lain with Kelly Gramlich, former Clemson offensive lineman and current ACC Network analyst Eric Mac Lain shared his thoughts on Uiagalelei, a Clemson graduate, suiting up for the Tigers’ ACC rival in Tallahassee next season.

“It’s strange. It is super strange,” Mac Lain said. “Even the just coming back across the country –I thought it would’ve been a West Coast thing, just to be closer to family, whatever.”

For Oregon State in 2023, Uiagalelei completed 57.1 percent of his passes for 2,638 yards and 21 touchdowns with seven interceptions. The former five-star prospect from California also had 219 rushing yards and six more scores on the ground.

Uiagalelei played at Clemson from 2020-22, going 22-6 as a starter. Overall in his career as a Tiger, the 6-foot-4, 252-pounder played in 36 games and completed 59.8 percent of his passes for 5,681 yards and 36 touchdowns with 17 interceptions, to go with 275 career carries for 913 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground.

Mac Lain added that the “fit is going to be interesting” for Uiagalelei with the Noles, who are having to replace former star quarterback Jordan Travis now that he’s moving on to the NFL.

“He’s got a rocket-launcher arm, he’s going to have a great offensive line in front of him. I think if he can really commit to the quarterback power and quarterback run, I mean, that’s electric and that’s hard to stop, being such a big monster like he is,” Mac Lain said of Uiagalelei.

“But just overall, the scheme is going to be interesting to see how that changes with Florida State having such a guy (in Travis) that can create and be a magician and escape and do these other things, to now kind of more so looking like we saw these last handful of games where there wasn’t a whole lot of points. So, we’ll see.”

Mac Lain is also curious to see how Uiagalelei does under the tutelage of FSU head coach Mike Norvell.

“Obviously they loved him and think that he can be a fantastic piece to this puzzle,” Mac Lain said. “How much does he continue to grow? And Coach Norvell, I think, is an exceptional play-caller but also developer, and how can he help DJ take another step there? So, it is going to be fascinating, it is going to be very interesting.”

After transferring to FSU, Uiagalelei is set to face off against Clemson next season. The Tigers travel to Tallahassee for a game that could be critical to see who makes next year’s ACC Championship Game.
