SUMMARY

"The Hill" is an inspiring movie about Rickey Hill, a baseball player with a degenerative spinal disease who pursues his dream against all odds.

James Hill, Rickey's father, plays a significant role in his life, supporting his passion and being a driving force behind his bravery.

James Hill passed away in the late 1970s after a battle with pancreatic cancer, but his legacy lives on through the movie and his son's faith, which he also followed.

James Hill was a key part of Rickey Hill's story and of the film, The Hill, and here's what happened to him in real life. A heartwarming and inspiring biographical sports drama movie, The Hill stars Colin Ford as Rickey Hill and Dennis Quaid as his father, James. The movie follows the story of Rickey, who had a degenerative spinal disease as well as big dreams to become a professional baseball player. Rickey manages to overcome the obstacles in his life to pursue that dream and serve as a role model to people all over the world.

The Hill not only focuses on Rickey Hill but also some of his family members. His father, James, was shown to be a huge influence in his life and a driving factor in his bravery to follow his passion against all odds. Dennis Quaid did an excellent job of bringing James to life, along with all of the emotion that comes with being a father worried about his child's health while not wanting to hold them back from pursuing their calling. In addition to helping shape Rickey's childhood, James continued to have a large role in his son's life even after the events of The Hill.

James Hill Became Ill & Passed Away In The Late 1970s

A Pastor deeply dedicated to his faith, James Hill spent his life trying to get closer to God. Unfortunately, in the late 1970s, James passed away after his battle with pancreatic cancer. By that point, Rickey was in an early retirement due to his aggravated health. His brother was also working on a book about Rickey's complicated, yet inspiring, life story at the time.

That book caught the attention of Hollywood, but the two brothers decided not to go forward with having it turned into a movie as the timing was too close to their father's death. The idea later went forward as The Hill, which does a great job of honoring and adding to James' legacy. According to The Cinemaholic, Rickey feels that his dad would have been in tears throughout the entirety of The Hill.

Rickey Hill has also helped to carry on his father's legacy by following in his footsteps. According to CBN, Rickey is still devout in his faith like his father before him. He has said that The Hill has allowed him to get closer to his religion and to God. He also managed to hold on to his beliefs, despite the temptations that a professional career might present. For example, he has shared that he didn't curse like fellow players. Instead, he took the opportunity of their long bus rides to preach to his team, and he would lead them in Gospel songs.
