Athens community members gathered for the grand opening of an Anne Frank Exhibition at the University of Georgia’s Hillel building on Monday. The exhibit, which consisted of informational banners coupled with a showing of a documentary, detailed Anne Frank’s life from her birth in Germany in 1929, to her death in 1945 and ultimately, her legacy.
Anne Frank, who was Jewish, hid from Nazis during the occupation of the Netherlands, according to Anne Frank House. During her hiding, she kept a diary where she wrote her feelings and stories. She was discovered two years later and died in a concentration camp in Germany.

Amanda Walls, an academic professional associate in the UGA department of religion, coordinated the project. The exhibit, which Walls said was five years in the making, borrowed materials from the Anne Frank Center at the University of South Carolina. The center at USC and now the exhibit at UGA both have ties to the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.
“To be able to have this little piece of the Anne Frank House here in Georgia and at UGA, to get to educate people on anti-semitism, I feel really blessed to be able to do that,” Ian Roberts, a sophomore political science and history double major who participated in facilitating discussion at the exhibit, said.
In her opening remarks, Walls discussed not only Anne Frank’s life and legacy but also the increasing rate of anti-semitic incidents in the U.S. According to data released by the Anti-Defamation League in January, a total of 3,291 anti-semitic incidents occurred between Oct. 7, 2023 and Jan. 7. This data represents a 361% increase from the same time period in 2022, which saw 712 incidents.
“So many Jewish communities in Athens and abroad just feel threatened,” Walls said. “To communicate that to others, who maybe don’t know what it feels like to be scared where you live, I think is a really important thing.”
Walls said that the most effective tool in combating anti-semitism is education, specifically peer education. According to Walls, conversations among friends can be more powerful than what is taught in classrooms.
